Hundreds gathered around Stone’s Memorial Square to pay their respects to those who have fallen in conflicts, past and present.

The Royal British Legion was founded in 1921 and their yearly Poppy Appeal, which aims to provide members of the British Armed Forces and their families with better financial, social and emotional support, has since become their biggest fundraising event.

In 1992, people from Stone raised £5,400 for the cause – a figure that has risen to £23,500 in 2011.

Legion member Noel Bevans, 25, said: “In the last five years the money raised in Stone has gone up considerably and so has the number of organisations presenting wreaths.”

Among the wreaths this year were ones from:

  • The Royal Air Forces Association
  • Staffordshire County Council
  • Bill Cash MP
  • The President of the Royal British Legion
  • The Town Mayor

Schools, academies and clubs also showed their support by placing wreaths around the Stone War Memorial on Granville Square.
